Brave Baby Girl Has Second Limb Amputated After Battle With Meningitis

    by

A brave baby girl has had part of her leg amputated as she continues to battle the deadly disease meningitis.

Ten-month-old Kia Gott has already had one of her arms amputated up to her elbow to fight the disease and her heartbroken parents Paul and Vikki Gott were told they’d have to remove all three of her remaining limbs.
The Telegraph and Argus report that however, that doctors made the last minute decision in the theatre to only remove one of her legs instead of all her remaining limbs.

Her family hope it will be the same for her remaining limbs.
Donna Gott a relative told the Telegraph & Argus that Kia’s parents were trying to stay positive and hoping for the best outcome.
    She said:
Kia is fairly stable right now. She went to the high dependency unit rather than intensive care after surgery which was a good sign.
The surgeons are really pleased with her.
It’s not to say she won’t need more surgery on her limbs in the future but for now there is a bit of light and she has a better chance of mobility.
Kia’s parents have been told by doctors that their little girl will most likely be blind, deaf and have brain-damage but they’re holding out hope she will prove them wrong.

The little girl has first rushed into intensive care in Leeds four weeks ago with meningococcal septicaemia after her mother took her to the GP as Kia hadn’t been acting like herself.
Kia had been jerking in her sleep and extremely lethargic, plus had a temperature of 38.5 C her symptoms then worsened and she had a mini cardiac arrest as paramedics tried to treat her with emergency drugs.

Goitrogens: Healthy Foods or Thyroid Triggers?

    by

You may have heard warnings that thyroid patients shouldn’t eat cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, and spinach. At the same time, these vegetables are often called “superfoods” because they’re rich in vitamins and minerals and offer many health benefits. Making smart, thyroid-friendly decisions about what you eat requires an understanding of goitrogenic foods and their effect on your thyroid.

    What are goitrogens?

Goitrogens are a category of foods that contain a natural chemical, goitrin, which interferes with your thyroid function.
Under normal circumstances, your body uses the iodine you ingest in food and supplements in order to manufacture your two primary thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Goitrin has the ability to block your body’s use of iodine, which decreases your hormone production and can cause hypothyroidism. Goitrin can also enlarge your thyroid, a condition known as goiter.
The key goitrogenic foods are cruciferous vegetables. Among the most potent goitrogenic foods are:
    • Bok choy
    • Collards
    • Brussels sprouts
    • Russian kale
Some of the least potent goitrogenic foods include the following:
    • African cassava
    • Babassu, a coconut fruit native to Africa and Brazil
    • Broccoli
    • Broccolini
    • Cabbage
    • Cauliflower
    • Chinese Broccoli
    • Daikon
    • Commercial Kale
    • Kohlrabi
    • Millet
    • Mustard Greens
    • Peaches
    • Peanuts
    • Pine nuts
    • Radishes
    • Red Radish
    • Rutabaga
    • Spinach
    • Strawberries
    • Turnips
    • Watercress

Soy is also a goitrogen, but it belongs in its own category because in addition to its goitrogenic potential, soy also has chemical properties that can block the body’s ability to properly absorb thyroid hormone.
The goitrogenic potential of foods is greatest when the foods are eaten raw, when you are deficient in iodine, and when you are deficient in selenium. The impact of goitrogenic foods is also “dose-dependent,” meaning that your risk increases the more frequently you consume these foods. Steaming or cooking, however, can eliminate much of their goitrogenic properties.
For those of you who don’t have a thyroid condition, it is considered safe to include some goitrogenic foods in your diet, whether raw or cooked. There is some risk of an impact on your thyroid, however, if you overconsume raw juices that include goitrogenic vegetables. Many juicing recipes call for as much as 3 to 4 cups of cruciferous vegetables (such as spinach or kale) to get just one glass of juice. Since juicing requires large quantities of these vegetables, raw juices can deliver large and concentrated amounts of thyroid-slowing goitrin.

    Goitrogen guidelines for thyroid patients

If you are being treated for a thyroid condition, there are some considerations you will want to keep in mind regarding goitrogenic foods.
After radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation: If you’ve had RAI to treat Graves’ disease/hyperthyroidism, most experts consider it safe for you to eat goitrogens, whether raw or cooked.
After thyroid surgery: If you’ve had surgery to remove your thyroid as a treatment for thyroid cancer, goiter, nodules, or hyperthyroidism, most experts consider it safe for you to eat goitrogens, whether raw or cooked.
Graves’ disease/hyperthyroid: If you have Graves’ disease and/or are hyperthyroid, some holistic and naturopathic physicians suggest that you increase the amount of raw goitrogenic foods in your diet as a natural way to slow down your production of thyroid hormone. If you are taking antithyroid drugs, you may also find that you can reduce the dosage of your medication.
Hypothyroid with a thyroid gland: If you are hypothyroid and still have a thyroid gland that is at least partially functional, you may want to be more careful about goitrogenic foods. Some tips:
    • Avoid overconsumption of goitrogenic foods in general.
    • If you do want to include these foods in your diet, remember that proper preparation — cooking, steaming, or fermenting — can reduce their goitrogenic properties.
    • Be careful about drinking raw juice that uses cruciferous vegetables and concentrates their goitrogenic properties.
    • Since iodine and selenium deficiency increase the impact on goitrogens on your thyroid, ask your practitioner to run tests for iodine and selenium deficiency, and supplement them if you are deficient.
    • Keep in mind that even when you reduce the goitrogenic potential through cooking, soy foods contain chemicals that have the ability to block absorption of thyroid hormone. Avoid overconsumption of soy foods, especially super-concentrated forms of soy, such as soy supplements.

After Surgery: Life with No Thyroid

    by

What life is like after your thyroid surgery — known as thyroidectomy — depends in part on the reason for and extent of your surgery.
    Total thyroidectomy
You may have a total thyroidectomy — removal of your entire thyroid gland — for several reasons:

    • To treat thyroid cancer • To remove a thyroid with multiple nodules, to remove an enlarged thyroid (goiter), or when nodules or a goiter are affecting your breathing and/or swallowing, or is visible and cosmetically unsightly • To treat hyperthyroidism when you can’t tolerate antithyroid drugs, aren’t responding to them, or won’t take them and radioactive iodine (RAI) is not an option, such as during pregnancy
Because your entire thyroid is removed in a total thyroidectomy, you become hypothyroid. As a result, you will require life-long thyroid hormone replacement medication — such as a levothyroxine drug like Synthroid or Levoxyl, or a natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) drug like Nature-throid or Armour — to replace your needed thyroid hormone.
    Sub-total/partial thyroidectomy or lobectomy
A sub-total/partial thyroidectomy (removal of part of your thyroid) or lobectomy (removal of one side or lobe of your thyroid) is performed for several reasons:
    • To remove a single thyroid nodule
    • To remove part of the thyroid when you have some one-sided thyroid enlargement
    • Less commonly, to remove a very small, non-aggressive thyroid cancer
In some cases, after a sub-total/partial thyroidectomy or lobectomy, your remaining thyroid tissue will be capable of producing enough thyroid hormone to prevent you from becoming hypothyroid. But the majority of patients do end up requiring thyroid hormone replacement medication over time.

After surgery: starting thyroid hormone replacement medication
Total thyroidectomy: If you have had a total thyroidectomy you will eventually end up taking thyroid hormone replacement medication. When will you typically start on this medication?
    • If you had your total thyroidectomy to treat thyroid cancer, your doctor will evaluate the pathology, stage your cancer, and recommend a follow-up treatment plan. If radioactive iodine (RAI) is required to ablate any thyroid tissue remaining after surgery, you will not be started on your thyroid medication until that treatment is completed. • If you had a total thyroidectomy due to goiter or nodules and were not hyperthyroid prior to surgery, your doctor will likely start you on thyroid hormone replacement medication right after your surgery. • If you had a total thyroidectomy as a treatment for hyperthyroidism, your doctor will likely evaluate your thyroid levels frequently after surgery. Levels of circulating thyroid hormone can remain elevated for weeks after surgery, and treatment will begin once your levels have dropped to a point where it’s safe and necessary for you to take thyroid hormone medication.
Sub-total/partial thyroidectomy/lobectomy: If you had a sub-total/partial thyroidectomy or lobectomy, it is likely that you will eventually need thyroid hormone replacement medication. Doctors will typically allow for enough time to evaluate whether your remaining thyroid tissue is producing enough thyroid hormone. TSH — and possibly free T4 and Free T3 — will be tested to determine if you have become hypothyroid after surgery. If your levels fall outside the reference range, your doctor will prescribe a thyroid medication.
Note: In some cases, your doctor may not make it clear to you after surgery that you are at risk of becoming hypothyroid. If, after a sub-total/partial thyroidectomy or lobectomy you begin to notice hypothyroid symptoms, see your doctor right away to have thyroid testing performed. Common symptoms you might experience include fatigue, weight gain, depression, hair loss, bloating and puffiness, and constipation.
    About thyroid hormone replacement medication
While your thyroid surgery may have been to treat cancer, goiter, nodules, or hyperthyroidism, going forward, you usually become hypothyroid. Your missing thyroid gland is unable to produce enough necessary thyroid hormone, and you will need to get that hormone via a prescription medication.
The most commonly prescribed thyroid hormone replacement medication is a synthetic version of the thyroid hormone known as thyroxine (T4). Known generically as levothyroxine — some common brand names are Synthroid, Levoxyl, and Tirosint — this category of thyroid drug is treatment preferred by conventional endocrinologists and physicians.
There is a synthetic version of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3) called liothyronine. The brand name in the United States is Cytomel. Liothyronine is also available by prescription in sustained-release formulations from compounding pharmacies. In some cases, liothyronine is prescribed along with levothyroxine, as part of T4/T3 combination therapy.
There is also a category of prescription thyroid hormone replacement drugs known as natural desiccated thyroid or NDT. The most well-known NDT drugs include Armour Thyroid and Nature-throid. These are drugs, produced from the dried thyroid glands of pigs, that natural forms of both the T4 and T3 hormones. T4/T3 combination therapy and NDT drugs are not commonly prescribed by conventional endocrinologists and practitioners but are increasingly popular with holistic and integrative physicians.
    Starting your thyroid hormone medication
Typically, you will be prescribed an initial dose of thyroid hormone medication that is based on your body weight. You should be rechecked in six to 12 weeks after you start medication or change your dose to determine if additional adjustments need to be made to your dosage. Once your thyroid levels have stabilized at your physician’s target test levels, your doctor may wait longer periods — such as 3, 6, or 12 months — between follow-up checks.
A few pointers on taking your medication:
    • Don’t forget to take your thyroid medication daily, ideally at the same time each day.
    • Take your thyroid medication in the morning — or at bedtime — on an empty stomach, at least an hour before or after eating.
    • Wait at least an hour after taking your thyroid medication before drinking coffee, including decaffeinated coffee.
Avoid taking foods and supplements high in calcium — such as calcium supplements, antacids, milk, and calcium-fortified juice — within four hours of taking your thyroid medication.
    • Avoid taking iron supplements within four hours of taking your thyroid medication.
    Your TSH target
If you had your thyroidectomy due to thyroid cancer, in some cases, your doctor will recommend that you take what’s known as a “suppressive” dose of thyroid hormone replacement. This means that your TSH should be kept either at the low end of the reference range or below the range, to help prevent a recurrence of your thyroid cancer.
If you did not have thyroid cancer, it’s likely that your physician will target a TSH level for you that falls within the laboratory reference range. Note that while the reference range at most labs runs from around 0.5 mIU/L to 5.0 mIU/L, many people on thyroid hormone replacement feel best when TSH is below 2.5 mIU/L.
    Optimizing your thyroid treatment
While some physicians feel that hypothyroidism treatment is complete once your TSH is in the reference range, there are practitioners who recognize that safe relief of your symptoms — what is referred to as “optimization” — is the goal.
If you are taking levothyroxine, have a TSH in the reference range (or suppressed, if you had thyroid cancer), you may want to discuss other treatment options with your practitioner, including:
    • Changing your dose to lower your TSH level. As noted, some practitioners feel that the target TSH level should be 2.5 mIU/L or less in order to relieve symptoms.
    • Switching brands of levothyroxine. Synthroid, for example, contains two allergens: acacia and lactose. Other brands are free of those fillers. And the liquid, gel-cap Tirosint is designed for maximum absorption for people with allergies, digestive problems, and absorption issues.
    • Changing to T4/T3 combination therapy, by adding a T3 drug such as liothyronine, Cytomel, or compounded, sustained-release T3.
    • Switching to — or adding — a T4/T3 natural desiccated thyroid drug such as Nature-throid or Armour.
If you are interested in pursuing T3 or natural desiccated thyroid treatment, you may need to consult with an integrative or holistic physician, as conventional endocrinologists and physicians tend to limit hypothyroidism treatment to levothyroxine drugs.
What about goitrogenic foods and soy?
Some experts caution those with thyroid conditions to be careful about overconsuming raw goitrogenic foods. Goitrogens are foods — including cruciferous vegetables like kale, spinach, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts — that when eaten raw and in large quantities can slow down your thyroid gland.
After a thyroidectomy, however, you are safe to eat goitrogenic foods — raw or cooked — without concern for any impact on your thyroid function.
You should, however, be careful about overconsumption of soy foods. When overconsumed, soy can impair your ability to absorb your thyroid medication.

Australian Dad Goes To Dangerous Extremes To Protect His Daughter

    by

Parents will do anything for their children. They will give up all they have, risk their own lives, and at times shift their own moral values to make sure their children are safe and totally happy.

Stephen Pattman was one such parent. He was desperate to protect his teenage daughter, even from herself. After she had begun dating a local boy with a troublesome past, he knew that he had only one option left, although it seemed misguided…

    Life in Suburbia

Stephen Pattman was a simple man. A landscape gardener living an ordinary life in suburban Australia with his wife and children. Both his daughter Chloe and his son Chris, were in their late teens and like all 19-year-olds, they had their little eccentricities and difficulties.
Chloe, for instance, had recently taken up with a young man named Al Bilal. Bilal was a father’s worst nightmare. He was a street tough, a hood, and with any luck, a temporary fling. As time went on, it became clear that he wasn’t going anywhere, and that wasn’t even the worst of it…
As it turned out, Ali Bilal was the president of one of the most feared motorcycle gangs in all of Australia: the ACT Rebels president. He wasn’t just some ordinary hoodlum after all. In fact, he was so feared and respected by his fellow gang rebels that they gave him the name Tony Soprano.

    The ACT Rebels

The ACT rebels, or the Rebels Motorcycle Club is an outlaw motorcycle club in Australia. It has 70 chapters with over 2,000 members nationwide, making it the largest such club in the country. As with many motorcycle clubs, the Australian government and law enforcement consider the Rebels to be a criminal organization, which of course didn’t make Stephen Pattman feel any better about his daughter’s beau…

    Pleading With Her

Despite their status as a conglomeration of criminals, the ACT Rebels still claim to be merely a group of motorcycle enthusiasts and not gangsters. Either way, it wasn’t the type of group that Stephen was comfortable having his daughter spend time with. For two years, Stephen tried to get Chloe to leave her bike boyfriend.

    Few Options

Stephen Pattman was at his wits’ end. He didn’t know what to think or what to do to help Chloe. “I could either do nothing and just watch her end up where — how creative can your mind be — where does she end up?” he thought to himself. Or he could consider one other extreme option…

    If You Can’t Beat em…

It finally dawned on Stephen that the best way to make sure nothing happened to his daughter with the ACT Rebels, was to become part of the ACT Rebels himself. That way, he could be there to make sure no harm came to her. And so, Stephen and his son Chris decided to join the gang themselves.

    Rules of the Club

The ACT Rebels has a number of rules written into their constitution. As expected, the club promotes the riding of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and all members must own one in order to join, Surprisingly though, drugs are “looked down on” within the club, with heroin and smoking methamphetamine being totally taboo. With these rules in mind, Chris and Stephen joined…

    Well-Equipped

Both men used their savings and bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle. They also purchased a single Magnum Revolver handgun….just in case. They met with Bilal and the rest of his chapter and were allowed to join. Before long, they had seamlessly integrated themselves into the gang.

    Life as a Rebel

Stephen and his son had taken extraordinary steps to protect Chloe and now they were in the midst of a group of men and women who weren’t exactly criminals but weren’t exactly the Boy Scouts of America either. They spent three years running with the rebels until they finally realized that they’d made a huge mistake…

    What Have I Done?

Afterwards, Stephen would think about his time with the ACT Rebels saying: “I found myself in situations where I wondered, ‘What the hell have I gotten myself into?’” It was becoming all too much for the Pattman boys. They had to get out, but how could they do it now? Were they in too deep?

    All Too Much

Once again, Stephen Pattman was faced with a difficult decision: stay and be complicit in the things the gang was doing and the crimes they were committing, or leave and be at the mercy of a spurned biker gang for the rest of his and his son’s lives. The father and son quit the gang and as expected, their departure didn’t go as smoothly as they would have liked…

    Repercussions

One of the rules of the ACT Rebels is that members are only permitted to join the club once and that they may never to join another motorcycle club, even if they leave. Stephen and his son knew their departure was going to result in some repercussions, but they had no idea how severe.

    Leave Us Alone

Once the patch was off their jackets, they knew their safety would be compromised. Stephen was no longer worried about Chloe, but about his own safety, and that of his son Chris. Despite his pleading that they be left alone, father and son were harassed by their former gang mates at every turn, and things only got worse from there…

    Confrontation

Stephen had asked time and time again that the ACT Rebels leave his family alone, but they refused. Finally, he could take no more. One day, he and Chris were standing on the side of a street in Canberra, in northern Australia, when they were confronted by a gang member who pulled up to them in a car.

    Safety Precaution

Chris, who was holding the very same Magnum Revolver they had bought for protection, quickly passed it over to his father. In a panic and at the very end of his patience, Stephen fired the gun into the car. The bullet went through the driver’s headrest and out the rear passenger window, but not before hitting the driver’s ear and causing temporary hearing damage…

    Run Away

Stephen and his son ran for it. They knew that if they didn’t they would be hunted down and killed by any number of the ACT Rebels many members. They fled to a national park, where they lived off of the grid for almost a year until finally, the guilt proved to be too much for Stephen to bear.

    It’s Time

Stephen came back and turned himself into the police. And thankfully by then, the ACT Rebels had stopped trying to find him and his son. He pleaded guilty to an act of endangering life and unauthorized use of a prohibited firearm and is currently awaiting sentencing. As for Chloe Pattman…

    Silver Lining

Overall, despite the possibility of being sent to jail, Stephen doesn’t regret joining the motorcycle gang. He’s even spoken to Chloe since he returned to society and she told him that though she was still with Bilal (it wasn’t a passing fling after all), the former president is no longer in the gang scene.

    Afraid for Chloe

According to Stephen’s last interview with “A Current Affair” Australia’s TV analogue of “60 Minutes”: “He (Bilal) claims he is out of that lifestyle now, and I hope he is true to his word because I do and did fear for my daughter’s life being around that scene.” At the very least, this is a story about the lengths some parents will go for their children.
